- Pre-requisite: ULSP51050 - LEAP Spanish 5 (B2/C1) or equivalent e.g. A level Spanish grade A* plus a placement test carried out by the course convenor.
- Co-requisite: If you are studying a Modern Languages Degree, either single or joint honours, please refer to relevant guidance about eligibility for LEAP units on your programme structure. This course is not open to native or near-native Spanish speakers.
- Taught during: Both semesters (September to May).
- Level of attainment: (C1+) By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level C1+ of the Common European Framework.

This course is designed to consolidate students’ level of proficiency, not only with the use of complex grammatical structures of the Spanish language but also with the introduction of higher advanced sophisticated written and aural texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including articles and reports concerned with contemporary issues. Students will also gain experience in translating primary texts from and into Spanish.
Students will gain proficiency in the ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at this, the ability to appreciate and use tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication and the ability to interact and negotiate orally in complex situations at a higher advanced level.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- demonstrate effective operational proficiency in the understanding and knowledge of language structure grammatical rules;
- follow debates, discussions or conversations as well as communicate in a wide variety of situations using higher advanced complex and linguistically accurate structures (different types of discourses, registers, etc.);
- understand longer concrete and abstract reading and listening material;
- produce cogent, detailed texts on complex topics and translate primary texts from and into Spanish.
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level C1+ of the Common European Framework.

Teaching and learning methods
One three-hours or two 90 minutes seminars per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary.
This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and will be supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning.
72 hours (3 hours per week) including assessment time.
Independent study hours
140 hours (not including assessment time).
All assessments are summative.
Non-credit students and members of the public need to be aware that written exams will not take place during lesson time.

Nature and timing of feedback
Feedback will include a combination of informal ongoing feedback resulting from class-based learning activities and formal written feedback given following summative assessments.
