Goethe-Institut (GI) Examination Centre
GIs, GI Centres, cultural societies, reading rooms and GI Examination Centres have played a central role in the cultural and educational policies of Germany for over 50 years.
The Goethe-Institut Examination Centre (GIPZ), operating from within the University of Manchester Language Centre (ULC), is part of this world-wide network. Here at the ULC we offer a complete service for learning German. This comprises German language courses run by LEAP (Language Experience for All), the university-wide language provision, as well as GI examinations.
Levels and courses
The GIPZ is licensed by the GI head office in Munich to run examinations at every level of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CEF). The quality and transparency achieved by adhering to these standards enable students who obtain any of our examinations to transfer their studies and examination results to any other GI-authorised institution worldwide. The levels of competency defined by the CEF are internationally recognised and allow direct comparisons between languages studied.
Courses are available at all levels, from complete beginners to near-native speaker fluency (CEF levels A1 to C2). The emphasis in our courses is on communication, with clearly defined learning outcomes as described in the CEF. Classroom time is complemented by guided online material for independent study. This blended approach gives you freedom to organise your learning and work at your own pace. For most courses there is a choice between daytime and evening classes.
