Klezmer

The Michael Kahan Kapelye is the University's klezmer ensemble, made up of students taking the World Music Ensemble Performance course unit.

Taught and directed by Dan Mawson and Richard Fay, the ensemble specialises in Jewish wedding music and Eastern European styles, alongside a more eclectic repertoire arranged by members of the ensemble in klezmer style.

In addition to giving an annual lunchtime concert at the Martin Harris Centre and being on call to play for events elsewhere in the University, the Kapelye also performs at Manchester Jewish Museum, as part of other world music events in the city and for the local Jewish community.

The Michael Kahan Kapelye often appears alongside other klezmer ensembles such as L'Chaim Kapelye, made up of former Manchester Music students who have continued to play together.
