Gamelan

Gamelan Adumanis ('sweet clash') is The University of Manchester's gamelan community, featuring two ensembles made up of students taking the World Music Ensemble Performance course unit alongside Extra Slice, our community gamelan group.

Students in gamelan performance

Using the instruments of the gamelan degung and gamelan salendro (two gong-chime orchestras indigenous to the Sundanese people of West Java), the ensembles play a broad range of Indonesian repertoire, both traditional and contemporary.

They also create exciting new compositions of their own, and engage in musical conversations with guest artists from different musical traditions.

The ensembles are taught and directed by Robert Szymanek. They give public performances in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall as part of our lunchtime concert series, and occasionally appear at other events such as the University's Community Festival.
