Fees and funding

Tuition fees cover the cost of your study at the University, as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, examinations and graduation.

Fees vary for each course, and details of individual course fees can be found in the course profiles.

Financial support packages are available to undergraduate students.

As well as student loans to cover fees and maintenance, UK/EU students may also be entitled to a University bursary or scholarship.

RWS Brode Scholarship (Languages)

The RWS Brode Scholarship

Funded by Andrew Brode and the RWS Group, the RWS Brode Scholarship supports students from lower income households studying a degree in modern languages at the University of Manchester.

To date, it has benefited 50 students who entered the university between 2019 – 2021 and has been extended to fund a further 30 students entering in 2023 and 2024.

Scholarship value

Scholarship holders receive £5000 each year during their 4-year undergraduate modern languages degree and are given the opportunity to connect with RWS through a detailed and bespoke annual programme of employability events and activity.

These opportunities encompass a combination of online and in person events, including a bespoke mentoring programme for scholarship recipients as well as our career fair, speed-networking events, employer presentations and welcome week panels, and work placements and internship opportunities promoted via the University’s Careers Connect job portal.

Eligibility

  • Recipients must be studying one of the following courses, entering in 2023 or 2024:
    • UG Single Honours Modern Languages
    • UG Joint Honours with two Modern Languages
    • UG Joint Honours Modern Language and Business and Management
  • Recipients must have attended a UK state school prior to joining the university
  • Recipients’ residual household income as assessed by Student Finance England must be less than or equal to £60,000. Please ensure you consent to share your financial details with the University when making an application to Student Finance. We cannot otherwise assess your eligibility.
  • Recipients must have achieved minimum grades ABB at A-level or equivalent
  • Contextual data flags and participation in University of Manchester Access Schemes (MAP and MDAS) will also be taken into consideration

How to apply

Students fulfilling the above criteria will be contacted in the autumn, after enrolling at the university, with an invitation to apply. You will be asked to write a supporting statement for your appliciation.

Applications will be assessed by a panel of academics from the Division of Modern Languages and Cultures and two staff members from SALC Undergraduate Admissions and the Humanities Access/Widening Participation team. Successful candidates will be notified by January.
