English and Creative Writing at Manchester currently has 38 full-time staff analysing more than 1,000 years of literature and culture.
In the 2014 Research Exercise Framework:
- 75% of our research outputs were graded either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
- 100% of our research environment was judged to be ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
- 100% of our impact case-studies were graded either ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’.
- 83% of our research activity received these classifications, with 38% graded as 4*.
Home to the Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture, the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Centre for New Writing, we facilitate interdisciplinary research, public engagement and creative activity.
World ranking
In the QS World University Rankings 2019, English Language and Literature at Manchester is ranked 22nd in the world and 7th in the UK.
The CSSC is the first research facility in the UK to focus exclusively on the interrelationships of sexuality, gender, culture, and history.
Our English Literature and Creative Writing academic staff are widely published, and their work is available in a range of formats.
