About

A warm welcome to Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, and Egyptology at The University of Manchester.

We offer a unique environment to study the ancient world. From the ancient Near East and Egypt to the Hellenistic and Roman Empires, and beyond.

Our interests include poetry and prose, material culture and social history, ancient philosophy, and science and medicine. Using scientific techniques to reveal hidden knowledge, we undertake large-scale research projects around:

  • ancient letter collections;
  • burial practices;
  • experiences of war;
  • Greek inscriptions in the UK;
  • the history of medicine;
  • translation studies.

We take an interdisciplinary approach to enjoy the huge skills across the department.
