German (Post-intermediate): Zoravar Bakshi

Zoravar, a credited student from India, studied Post-intermediate German at the University Language Centre (ULC).

Why did you choose to study a language at The University of Manchester?

I love languages and studied German at school in my GCSEs and A-levels.

I chose to study German at The University of Manchester as I wanted to incorporate some element of language study into my degree. The goal was to develop my existing German knowledge, get back some level of fluency and ultimately use my skills in the workplace after graduation.

Apart from class time, how much time did you spend a week on your studies?

My degree and extra-curricular activities kept me very busy. However, I spent at least three hours a week studying German, and listening to German news and radio shows.

How did you find your course in terms of level?

It was just the right level for what I wanted to learn.

In some parts it was challenging; however, my hard work did pay off.

What did you most enjoy about your course?

The teaching was outstanding.

The tutor made her students feel very confident and comfortable with the language, to the extent that we felt like German was second nature to us. The department had structured the course brilliantly and help was always available.

Have you been able to put your newly acquired language skills to use outside the classroom? If so, please tell us how.

Yes, indeed I have.

I have obtained a place on a graduate scheme in a world-leading company based on my language skills and exposure to German culture. This has to be one of the biggest rewards of learning a language as a university student.

What advice would you give to someone intending to study a language at the University Language Centre?

Definitely consider it. It is not 'easier' than other degree subjects because it requires a lot of dedication and time. But if a candidate is seeking employment, having language skills opens doors you didn't even know existed. Learning about other cultures by learning a language is an unparalleled experience, which is offered in the most organised fashion by the University.

Another incredible thing is that you get to meet language lovers like yourself in classes - so I guess there is a social element to learning languages at the ULC.
