German (Intermediate): Charles Pendlebury

Charles, from the UK, studied Intermediate German at the University Language Centre (ULC).

Why did you choose to study a language at The University of Manchester?

Charles Pendlebury

I have wanted to learn a second language for many years.

Being in full-time employment made it difficult for me to fit in lesson times, but the University runs several classes over the week at times suitable for me.

Apart from class time, how much time did you spend a week on your studies?

At least three hours and sometimes a lot more.

How did you find your course in terms of level?

It can be very challenging for me, but the tutors are very patient and helpful.

What did you most enjoy about your course?

Seeing how far I have progressed over the years that I have been studying. I am in my sixties now and I feel proud that I can still learn.

Have you been able to put your newly acquired language skills to use outside the classroom? If so, please tell us how.

I have close friends in Germany whom I try to visit at least twice a year so I am able to practise without feeling embarrassed.

Many people are pleased that you are actually trying to learn their language and will help you.

What advice would you give to someone intending to study a language at the University Language Centre?

Just enjoy yourself and do not be afraid to ask questions.
