Facilities
Our students and staff have access to a wide range of technical facilities, online resources and unique collections at the John Rylands Library.
At the University we have a Phonetics Laboratory with facilities for signal analysis, speech synthesis, laryngography and electropalatography, a large collection of specialist software and linguistic corpora, and, in The University of Manchester Library, one of the largest holdings in linguistics in the UK.
In addition, our researchers have digitalised some of the John Rylands Library’s special collection on Linguistics and Translation Studies, as well as creating an open access database.

Phonetics Lab
The Phonetics Laboratory is the hub for research in acoustic and articulatory phonetics, experimental phonology, and sociophonetics.
It is available for use by staff and postgraduate research students, and by undergraduate and master's students with appropriate supervision.
Some equipment is available for loan on a short-term basis.
The lab hosts weekly reading groups in phonology/phonetics and in language variation and change, as well as tutorial meetings for course units in phonetics and quantitative methods.
Equipment and help from the Lab Assistant is available during a weekly drop-in hour.
The current Phonetics Lab Director is Dr Patrycja Strycharczuk.

Computers and software
Psycholinguistics Lab
The Psycholinguistics Laboratory is our new facility for research in psycholinguistics, language processing, and speech perception.
It is available for use by staff and postgraduate research students, and by undergraduate and master's students with appropriate supervision.
The current Psycholinguistics Lab Director is Dr Vera Hohaus.
Equipment
We have a sound-attenuated quiet room for running experiments, able to accommodate up to three participants at a time and fully equipped with:
- E-Prime
- Serial Response Pads
- Eye-tracking
