Arabic, English and Spanish: Capucine Chatagner

Capucine, a credited student from France, studied English, Pre-intermediate Arabic and Advanced Spanish at the University Language Centre (ULC).

Why did you choose to study a language at The University of Manchester?

As an Erasmus student, I chose to study at The University of Manchester for two reasons: the proposed course units were attractive, and there seemed to be a lot of diversity in the University.

This year has been full of opportunities to meet people from all over the world, and the teachers of my courses were skilful.

Apart from class time, how much time did you spend a week on your studies?

I would say around four hours a day, more during the exam period.

How did you find your course in terms of level?

If you study enough it is not too difficult, but the expectations were higher than those I was used to in France.

What did you most enjoy about your course?

I did take classes from different schools, and what I enjoyed the most was this opportunity to learn English through different topics.

I did also appreciate the fact that students were all-welcoming here in Manchester.

Have you been able to put your newly acquired language skills to use outside the classroom? If so, please tell us how.

Of course, I can apply my newly acquired language skills to use outside the classroom.

In Manchester, you meet new people every single day. And the university offers many opportunities to talk with foreign people as well.

What advice would you give to someone intending to study a language at the University Language Centre?

Even if you think this is too hard for you, never give up.

I have had difficulties with my Arabic all year long but I did my best. Work is always rewarding.
