Course: MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies, Full Time, 2013-14

I came to the Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA hoping to develop my skills as I embarked upon a career in the museum industry. The mix of academic study and vocational training appealed to me, as did the University’s affiliation with the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum. I was pleased to find that the course met my needs very well and the support and encouragement I received from the academic staff helped my progress throughout my time on the MA.

During the MA there were several opportunities to gain practical experience in working in a museum environment. I was fortunate enough to work on an exhibition project at the Manchester Museum and complete a work placement at the Whitworth Art Gallery. The experience of working in a gallery for an extended period of time was invaluable, and I relished the chance to develop my skills in a professional environment.

I found the academic content of the course to be challenging and inspiring. I learned a great deal from group seminars, where lively debate and critical thinking were always on offer – along with a slice of cake.

Completing the MA gave my career the start I was hoping for. I now work as an Assistant Research Analyst for Morris Hargreaves McIntyre, a market research company that specialises in understanding museum and gallery audiences and I draw upon the knowledge and research skills I gained during my MA every day.
