Course: MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies, Full Time, 2016-17

The MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at The University of Manchester is an invaluable experience that I would strongly recommend to anyone interested in the field. Coming from a different background (Communication Science), I chose the AGMS course for its balance of theoretical and practical modules, which gave me the useful tools and expertise to start thinking critically about the sector and building my future career.

Modules as Introduction to Museum Studies, Curating Art and Creative Learning – all supported by seminars, fieldtrips and workshops – were particularly stimulating to deepen and analyse the sector from a range of different perspectives. In parallel, both the Managing Collections and Exhibitions moduleand the Placement resulted in a great chance to implement what learnt during the course, by having the opportunity to plan and curate an exhibition, catalogue a museum’s collection and work alongside museum professionals.

Apart from the quality of the course itself, coming from abroad I particularly enjoyed the support given by the academic staff and the fellow students as well as the great cultural activities offered by the city.

Thanks to the experience gained during the MA, I was able to work as a Creative Space Programmer for The Creative Learning Guild in Halifax and organise the launch of the charity’s new Learning Space. Moreover, I had the chance to curate a collective art exhibition in Rome, Roma Nuova Scuola, as an independent curator.
