Vona Groarke
Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing
Vona Groarke joined the Creative Writing team in September 2007. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, and University College, Cork, she has previously worked in the UK, the United States and Norway. She co-held the Heimbold Chair in Irish Studies at Villanova University in Pennsylvania in 2004 and taught at Wake Forest University up to 2007.
Her poetry collections with Gallery Press include Shale (1994), Other People's Houses (1999),Flight (2002), which was shortlisted for the Forward Prize (UK) in 2002 and won the Michael Hartnett Award in 2003, and Juniper Street (2006). Wake Forest University Press published; Flight and Earlier Poems; in 2004, and Juniper Street in October 2006.
In 2008, her translation of the classic Irish poem by Eibhlin Dhubh Ni Chonaill (which Peter Levi described in his inaugural lecture as Oxford Professor of Poetry as the "greatest poem written in these islands in the whole eighteenth century") was published as Lament for Art O'Leary. She has also edited and introduced the Gallery Press edition of Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village.
Recent poems of hers have appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, The Yale Review, The Irish Times, P.N. Review, The Antioch Review, Poetry Review, Poetry London, Poetry (Chicago) and Arete.
