German (Pre-intermediate): Michelle Blick

Michelle, a credited student at The University of Manchester, studied Pre-intermediate German at the University Language Centre (ULC).

Why did you choose to study a language at The University of Manchester?

I chose to study a language because I wanted to study something outside of my course and gain valuable skills for the future.

Apart from class time, how much time did you spend a week on your studies?

Outside of our weekly three-hour lessons, I spent about four extra hours on the weekly homework and much longer in the lead-up to exams.

How did you find your course in terms of level?

I found that the course was challenging initially. However, over time I became more comfortable with a lot of help and support.

What did you most enjoy about your course?

The thing I enjoyed most about the course was that, as well as learning a language, it allowed me to meet a lot of other people of all different ages to enjoy the experience of learning a language with.

Have you been able to put your newly acquired language skills to use outside the classroom? If so, please tell us how.

I have not yet had the chance to put my new language skills to use. However, I definitely look forward to visiting Germany in the near future and doing so.

What advice would you give to someone intending to study a language at the University Language Centre?

The advice I would give to new language learners is to not be put off by the initial difficulty. Persevere - you will find that before you know it, you will have improved significantly.

Also, you should practise often, even if it's just half an hour every couple of days.
