LEAP course information
Our LEAP courses are open to anyone who wishes to learn a language. You might wish to take a language as an elective component of your degree for academic credit, or you may wish to study a language alongside your degree on a not-for-credit basis
Most of our languages are taught at several levels starting at beginners’ level and are available to everyone (see LEAP Courses). Courses in 2021/22 begin the week commencing 27 September 2021 (see Course Dates for full information).
Mode of Study
Remote study option for Semester 1
Some Departments in the University of Manchester are able to offer a remote study option for Semester 1 in the 2021-22 academic year. This is because whilst the University expects to welcome most students to campus next semester, we appreciate that ongoing travel restrictions and other safety measures may make it difficult for some students to travel to the UK. Students have been contacted by their home Departments with information on whether a remote study option in Semester 1 is possible for their degree programme.
LEAP will permit remote study in Semester 1 in some cases – please see below for further information. However, due to the nature of the teaching and learning methods, we strongly recommend that LEAP courses are studied on campus.
I am studying a degree programme at the University of Manchester, and I have opted for remote study in Semester 1:
We will permit remote study on the LEAP course in Semester 1 only, if you have selected the remote study option for your main degree programme. Please indicate this on the LEAP application form. This information will then be checked and verified with your home Department.
If you have selected the option to study on campus for your main degree, then you must study the LEAP course on campus.
I am a staff member, alumnus or member of the public and I would like to discuss options to study a LEAP course remotely in Semester 1:
We may be able to accommodate your request to start the LEAP course with us in Semester 1 only. If you wish to study with us remotely in Semester 1, the current position is that you must be available to study on campus in Semester 2. Please get in touch with us on firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss starting the course remotely with us in Semester 1.
LEAP classes will run at the advertised times providing enrolments reach our minimum requirements. In the event that a class is unable to run, all students will be notified at the earliest opportunity, before teaching starts. Whilst we do not envisage that class times will change once teaching has started, there may be exceptional circumstances whereby this is unavoidable, for example, due to staff illness. LEAP would endeavour to accommodate students in existing classes as far as possible.
All courses are delivered at Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
