Why did you choose to study Music at The University of Manchester?

James Gillett

Six months before applying for university my heart was set on a maths degree. When it came to applying, however, I realised that I didn’t want to spend my days doing anything other than music.

The freedom of the course was so important to me, hand-in-hand with the opportunities from around the city to watch concerts and make music.

What has been the highlight of your course?

Academically, spending time with my supervisor researching my dissertation. Practically, conducting and being involved in The University’s annual opera.

What is the best thing about living and studying in the city of Manchester?

The music scene within Manchester is extremely vibrant and offers much to explore. Although it is one of the biggest cities in the UK, there is a strong sense of community and the city feels more welcoming than you might expect.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?

Much of my time is spent with MUMS (Manchester University Music Society), either as an active member of the committee, or performing in and watching many of the concerts that are put on every year. This has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my time at university and I would strongly recommend students get involved with one of the vast number of societies that Manchester has to offer - and it’s a great way to make new friends.

What are your plans for life after graduation?

Because of the support, training, and opportunities Manchester University has provided me with, I have been offered opportunities to work and observe at a number of opera companies. I hope to pursue a career as a conductor.

Any advice for applicants and prospective students?

Music was not originally my first choice of study, and it was only while writing my personal statement that I realised I should be applying for a music degree. From this moment I have never looked back. It is okay to be unsure of what you want to study, and it is okay to change your mind. What’s most important is doing something you enjoy and are willing to work for.
