I chose to read History at Manchester due to several factors. As a northerner living abroad, I had narrowed down the will to study back in North England. It was a 50/50 between Manchester and another institution, and Manchester offered me a great offer very quickly after my UCAS application. I had my heart set on Manchester already after being shown around during a Pharmacy open day and felt that I would enjoy studying at Manchester.

The student vibe, the campus feeling on Oxford Rd. I originally thought about studying Pharmacy. Also other reasons such as recommendations, family nearby and mutual friends who were heading to Manchester influenced my decision.

FTBpro.com is a start-up social network and I have been part of it from near the beginning, helping it grow gradually into the world’s biggest UGC community platform. My general education at University including basic skills have helped me perform the tasks asked of me. A start-up requires unsocial working hours, focusing on different tasks at different times while maintaining a simple goal.

Also, one needs to balance a social life and hobbies along with getting to know a new city and working environment. University did prepare me for this in find the balance between work and life, but also leaving time to engage in hobbies ( I played Rugby for the Manchester and was an active member of the campus league ) and for social activities ( Francophone society ).

University relates to a start-up because although it might seem easy going at times, the results do matter and although the attention shifts between varying subjects, they are all important and add up eventually.

One of the biggest improvements in my skills was my reading and editing. This was especially helped by the History department staff who helped me fine tune these skills. I do a lot of writing and editing in my job, and this is a skill that was definitely improved during my time in Manchester. Other skills such as time management and working towards deadlines might sound like a given, but it is also a skill that I improved during my three years at Uni.

I can fully recommend studying at the University of Manchester. The department has a lot to offer and I am sure it will continue to improve. I enjoyed nearly all of my modules within the History department and made several good friends through my History studies.

The courses on offer were interesting and wide-ranging. Living in Manchester as a student was also a great experience with a massive amount of leisure and entertainment facilities coupled with a pulsating nightlife.
