13 July 2017
Professor Stephen Milner has been appointed as the new Director at the British School at Rome (BSR), a five-year secondment from his role as Serena Professor of Italian, which he has held since 2006.
Also Chair of Italian Studies and Head of Department, Stephen will continue to be a member of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures and will devote a fifth of his time to University activities.
Stephen, who will take up his new role in the autumn, said: "I'm delighted to have been invited to lead the largest British international research institute at this strategically important time for the UK's European and international research profile.
"The range of the BSR's activities in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts aligns with my own interdisciplinary background, and I'm looking forward to working alongside Fellows and early career researchers from across the UK and Commonwealth at the heart of Rome, one of the world's most important cultural crossroads."
The British School at Rome is part funded by the British Academy and each year it hosts over 40 practitioners and scholars as Fellows for periods of between three and ten months, and more than 500 visiting scholars from around the world.
For more than 100 years, world-class researchers of the art, history, and culture of the western Mediterranean and beyond, together with the best contemporary artists from across the Commonwealth, have been nurtured at the BSR, and it counts multiple Turner Prize winners among its alumni.
