Postgraduate research

We offer excellent supervision for research projects that are focused on diverse aspects of translation, interpreting or intercultural communication. Most of the research we supervise is interdisciplinary, drawing conceptually or methodologically from sociology, history, literary studies, linguistics, cultural studies or other disciplines. If you are interested in applying for one of our PhD programmes, please send your enquiry to the SALC PGR Director, Dr Peter Cave, who will review your research proposal and MA grades in the first instance. If you fulfil the formal entry requirements and your proposed research falls into one of our areas of expertise, we will review your research proposal. The proposal should present a strong rationale for the research, with a clearly articulated set of research questions. It should show your familiarity with the research context and also demonstrate that you are prepared, theoretically and methodologically, to undertake the proposed project. If we have the necessary supervisory capacity, we will then advise you on the next steps in the application process

Your supervision is led by a main supervisor and supported by a co-supervisor/second supervisor. An independent reviewer also serves on your supervisory panel, and specialists from other disciplines may also participate in your supervision, depending on the nature of your project. You will have frequent meetings with your supervisor(s) and a formal review of your progress by the panel every six months. Our close supervision helps you to make consistent progress throughout your studies and to complete your research and thesis in a timely manner.
