Middle Eastern Studies
Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Manchester
For over a hundred years, The University of Manchester has been a major centre for the study of languages, history, religions, literatures and cultures of the Middle East.
The Middle East is an area of vital economic, political and strategic importance in the modern world. Knowledge of the area, its peoples, cultures and history can help us to understand current international events. And the regions’s place in history is no less important. It is the birthplace of three of the world's religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – and the site of ancient civilizations. Combining all these factors makes academic study of the Middle East especially rewarding.
We offer a wide variety of exciting degree courses, covering the history, culture, literatures and religions of the wider Middle East. We also offer the flexibility to study one or two Middle Eastern Languages from beginners’ level (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish), Modern Middle Eastern History with one of the Middle Eastern Languages or even degrees that combine a Middle Eastern Language and a European Language. This allows you the freedom to tailor your course according to your own personal interests and goals.
Study of the Middle East can lead you to a variety of opportunities for employment. Previous graduates have gone on to careers with businesses within the region, government agencies and international organisations.
