Music Society

Be part of the the largest, most active and ambitious student-led music society in the country.

The Manchester University Music Society (MUMS) is one of the most active student-run music societies in the country, with over 700 members, offering a huge range of musical and work experience opportunities.

Auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles run by MUMS include Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Big Band, Brass Band, Wind Orchestra, String Orchestra, Ad Solem (chamber choir) and the MUMS Opera. Chorus and the Cosmo Singers are run as a separate society and perform every semester in the historic Whitworth Hall with Symphony Orchestra. Students perform regularly with Music Theatre Society, Gilbert and Sullivan Society, MSC Big Band and more.

Performance and competition

MUMS members have had their high standard of music making publicly recognised throughout the world.

The flagship Symphony Orchestra is at the heart of the Society, having toured Germany and the Czech Republic in July 2011, and Bulgaria in September 2009. Additionally, in April 2008 they reached the final of the respected SymphUni competition.

The Manchester University Wind Orchestra (MUWO) won a gold award at the National Concert Band Festival Final in 2008 and continue to impress audiences with their playing skills.

Ad Solem, the University’s official chamber choir, toured Amsterdam in 2011, Poland in 2010 and have performed at well-known venues in and around Manchester.
