Manchester International Summer School

Join the Manchester International Summer School (MISS) in July 2013 for a three-week course on British culture and history, and discover the contemporary city of Manchester and its region.

If you're based overseas, and would like to experience studying abroad, we'd like to offer you the chance to study at The University of Manchester in July 2013, with courses and study visits on British history, culture, literature, art, sport and music.

Manchester was the world’s first city of the industrial revolution and has always been an important place for political thinkers and social reformers. You will get to explore Manchester through lectures and seminars with leading academics, visits to its famous Victorian buildings and its modern architecture, as well as the art and literature that responded to the massive social changes of the last two centuries.

From the past two hundred years, artists, writers, musicians, collectors and philanthropists have made Manchester a leading centre for the arts and culture. Great novels were written about Manchester, art galleries were opened and famous musicians performed here. Beyond the city, writers were also inspired by the landscapes of the Lake District and Yorkshire. We will take you to art galleries, libraries and also the houses where writers such as the Bronte sisters, John Ruskin and William Wordsworth lived and worked.

Today, Manchester is known throughout the world for its famous football teams and its popular music scene. We will explore the urban culture of the contemporary city, including the role of sport, music and design in the local and global identities of both Manchester and Liverpool.

We look forward to welcoming you to The University of Manchester and to our exciting city.

Application closes on 15 April 2013.
